An aerial photograph taken recently by a passenger aboard a commercial flight descending into Washington, DC, captured various renovations happening across the city. Taken on June 16, the image spotlights the algae-infested Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, damage to the South Lawn of the White House after the UFC Freedom 250 fight, and a marked covering on the National Mall.
The marking on the National Mall, reading “8647,” led to an investigation by the U.S. Park Police. Earlier this month, the Department of the Interior completed work on the Reflecting Pool, yet the renovation has left the pool with an algae-green color. This hue is a stark contrast to the “American Flag Blue” that former President Donald Trump had chosen to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary.
Efforts are ongoing to tackle the algae issue. On June 17, workers were seen applying hydrogen peroxide to the pool to curb the algae growth. Yet, areas of the reflecting pool remain green as of Wednesday.
Simultaneously, repairs are underway on the South Lawn. Following the UFC fight on June 14, the White House announced on June 16 that ScottsMiracle-Gro, in coordination with the National Park Service, will spearhead efforts to restore the lawn’s grass. The company has pledged $1 million toward this restoration initiative.
USA TODAY has reached out to the National Park Service for further details regarding the repairs on the National Mall, especially concerning the discoloration and political message.
