Meteorologists are forecasting a potential El Nino climate pattern that could be the strongest recorded, bringing more extreme weather. Jeff Berardelli, WFLA-TV Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist in Tampa, Florida, stated that unprecedented weather events could occur.
El Nino’s Expected Impact
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) anticipates an El Nino to emerge mid-year, affecting global temperature and rainfall. While models suggest a strong event, forecasting accuracy is more challenging in the spring.
Understanding El Nino
El Nino is a natural cyclical warming of the equatorial Pacific waters, influencing global weather. Its counterpart, La Nina, features cooler waters. Berardelli explained that El Nino redistributes Earth’s heat. Currently, heat from the Pacific subsurface is moving eastward and rising to the surface, indicating El Nino’s onset.
The WMO’s update reveals rapidly increasing sea-surface temperatures. Wilfran Moufouma Okia, WMO’s climate prediction chief, confirmed strong confidence in El Nino’s development, with further strengthening expected. El Nino occurs every two to seven years, lasting nine to 12 months.
Reasons for Concern
Daniel Swain, climate scientist at the California Institute for Water Resources, noted the significant subsurface warm water anomalies, which are crucial for El Nino development. These anomalies are among the largest recorded. While a “super El Nino” remains uncertain, the conditions for notable events are present.
Berardelli indicated that increased Pacific heat could lead to stronger heat waves and more intense floods in some regions, while also suppressing the Atlantic hurricane season. The Caribbean expects a drier summer with fewer tropical systems.
Global Impacts
El Nino has worldwide effects. In the U.S., hotter than normal conditions are anticipated, particularly with significant heat waves. Berardelli also predicts more frequent thunderstorms in the Southwest.
Forest degradation affecting the Amazon, driven by wildfires, logging, and drought, could worsen by 2026 with a strong El Nino. Swain believes that the combination of El Nino’s surface heat and climate change will break global warmth records within the next year. He expects a turbulent climate period globally.
Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, remarked that while El Nino temporarily raises global temperatures, it tends to oscillate back towards La Nina, which cools temperatures temporarily. The ongoing concern is the long-term warming caused by fossil fuel burning.
