Paramount Criticizes Mark Ruffalo for Antisemitic Remarks on Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

Paramount Criticizes Mark Ruffalo for Antisemitic Remarks

Actor Mark Ruffalo has come under fire from Paramount Pictures for allegedly using antisemitic tropes in discussions surrounding the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. This conflict arises amid a canceled meeting by California Attorney General Rob Bonta concerning the $110 billion streaming deal.

Hollywood producers Haim Saban, Lawrence Bender, and Teddy Schwarzman publicly accused Ruffalo of engaging in “simple antisemitism.” They argued the actor employed stereotypes about Jewish wealth and power while criticizing Paramount and its proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. The accusations were made in an online statement by The Brigade, a collective of nearly 1,000 industry insiders.

The Brigade stated, “This is not commentary on a merger or criticism of a government. It is simple antisemitism, portraying Jewish executives as a secretive and powerful wealth-hoarding elite.”

Paramount Stands by Accusations Against Ruffalo

A Paramount spokesperson affirmed their stance when approached by Fox News Digital, stating, “We stand by the statement.” There were no further comments from Paramount.

Ruffalo refuted these allegations, describing them as “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.” According to Ruffalo, his remarks were aimed at the political and corporate dynamics of the merger, not at Jewish people.

California Republican Party Responds

Elizabeth Barcohana, the Jewish engagement chair for the California Republican Party, remarked that Ruffalo’s opposition highlighted Hollywood’s liberal activism. Barcohana commended The Brigade for their stance against Ruffalo, whom she described as more of an activist than an actor.

“Ruffalo as an anti-merger spokesman is an odd choice due to his extremist rhetoric,” Barcohana noted. “I applaud The Brigade for challenging the rise of antisemitism within Hollywood.”

The Brigade’s Position and Statement

The Brigade, including members like Ram Bergman, Matti Leshem, Anthony Bregman, Micah Green, and Lynn Harris, rejected Ruffalo’s distinction between criticism of political actions and antisemitism. They argued that Ruffalo’s focus on Israel imported antisemitic conspiracy theories into the corporate debate.

Ruffalo sparked controversy by sharing a video of Oracle executive Safra Catz discussing technology used to aid Israel post the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. He connected Oracle’s Larry Ellison to financial backing behind the acquisition.

Hollywood’s Reaction to the Controversy

Hollywood figures have taken sides in the dispute. John Cusack supported Ruffalo, while “Hacks” actress Hannah Einbinder dismissed the antisemitism claim. The Simon Wiesenthal Center praised Paramount for their stance.

The proposed merger is under antitrust scrutiny, with 12 state attorneys general filing a lawsuit to block it. The transaction’s completion awaits court rulings, with a potential closure date not earlier than June 1, 2027.
