Kelsey Grammer recently shared the unexpected decision that led to ‘Frasier’s’ success as a top sitcom. He spoke about this on the ‘Planet Tyrus’ show, recalling nearly taking a different role after ‘Cheers’ until a pivotal conversation altered his career path.

For nine seasons, Grammer portrayed Dr. Frasier Crane on ‘Cheers’, transforming from a side character into a regular at the bar. After ‘Cheers’, Grammer almost started a new show but was advised by John Pike, then president of Paramount, to continue as Frasier. Pike believed the character had the potential to lead a show independently.

“We want to do a show with you when ‘Cheers’ is over,” Grammer said they told him. “We think you could actually carry a show on your own.”

Initially, Grammer was working with the same writers on a different script. However, Pike’s advice to focus on Frasier led to the development of the ‘Frasier’ show. Grammer agreed with Pike’s assessment, understanding the potential of his character to engage audiences uniquely, including restricting any focus on Frasier’s son to keep the storylines fresh and centered on adult themes.

Transitioning Frasier’s character from Boston to Seattle was another strategic move. This geographical change distanced the character from ‘Cheers’ and provided a plausible explanation for his son’s limited involvement in the show.

The show’s premiere on September 16, 1993, marked the start of an 11-season run that concluded on May 13, 2004. ‘Frasier’ became acclaimed, securing 37 Primetime Emmy Awards and attracting over 25 million viewers for its finale.

In 2023, Grammer reprised his famous role in a ‘Frasier’ revival on Paramount+, which revisited the character’s return to Boston. Despite its initial success, the series only lasted two seasons, concluding in 2025. Notably missing from the revival was John Mahoney, who played Frasier’s father, Martin Crane. Mahoney passed away in 2018 at age 77.

Grammer fondly remembered Mahoney, sharing anecdotes about his off-screen personality and relationship with the character’s dog, Eddie. Though beloved by audiences, the affection between Mahoney and the dog wasn’t genuine. Mahoney humorously struggled with the dog off-camera, often requiring persuasion to interact with him.

Grammer reflected on his experiences, expressing enthusiasm for life’s variety and the professional journey he’s enjoyed through acting. His love for meeting people and experiencing life’s diverse offerings keeps him motivated. He noted his passion for activities such as horseback riding, shooting, and discovering new adventures, emphasizing the rich experiences life continues to offer.
