In contrast, when a committee seeks to hold Democrats accountable, networks often ignore it. An illustrative instance is the release of COVID-19 czar Dr. Anthony Fauci’s personal diary by Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul. On July 25, Paul unveiled over 1,100 pages from Fauci’s government computer, covering 2019 to 2022. Despite this substantial reveal, network coverage was scant. The “CBS Evening News” shared a brief report two days post-release. More coverage emerged only as Fauci prepared to testify before Paul’s committee.
Fauci’s diary entries are indeed newsworthy. Notable points include his early acknowledgment that COVID-19 did not originate from the Wuhan wet markets, despite his public dismissal of the lab-leak theory as a conspiracy. Additionally, Fauci maintained friendly relations with the media, including CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos praised him after an interview. Fauci’s diaries reveal a developing friendship with CNN’s Tapper, noting dinners and even providing interview questions for Tapper to use.

When networks began covering the Fauci hearing, their narratives supported Fauci. Despite Fauci’s bragging about politicians taking his advice, Gounder claimed he never enjoyed his fame, contradicting diary entries.
The media coverage portrayed Paul as improper in releasing Fauci’s government-composed diaries, suggesting they were private. “CBS Evening News” reported on the tense hearing where Paul removed one of Fauci’s lawyers, while networks highlighted Democratic claims of a biased GOP investigation.
O’Brien described Fauci as “the man millions turned to” during the pandemic, lamenting his silence under Republican questioning. ABC’s Stephanopoulos deemed the hearing “partisan,” contrasting with non-partisan portrayals of the January 6 hearings.
The pattern is clear: Republican-led hearings are portrayed as partisan spectacles, while Democrat-led hearings are seen as noble pursuits of democracy. This evident media bias contributes to declining public trust in news outlets.
