Macklemore Faces Backlash Over Pro-Palestinian Stance On Tour

Rapper Macklemore has found an ally in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as criticism mounts over his pro-Palestinian statements during an opening act for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour earlier this month. Ocasio-Cortez addressed the controversy in a fundraising memo to supporters, highlighting reports that billionaire Robert Kraft influenced Macklemore’s removal from the tour.

According to the memo obtained by Fox News Digital, Ocasio-Cortez stated, “Billionaire stadium owner, Robert Kraft, did not like Macklemore, a Grammy-winning rapper, saying ‘Free Palestine’ on stage,” leading to Macklemore being dropped from Sheeran’s concerts. She emphasized the broader implication of this action, arguing it reflects how powerful individuals can suppress discussions on significant issues, such as the genocide in Gaza.

She portrayed Macklemore’s situation as symbolic of a larger struggle between social classes. Citing oligarchs and billionaires as potential suppressors of various issues, she stressed the risks of such power consolidations.

Macklemore, known for his 2012 hit “Thrift Shop,” voiced “Free Palestine” at a New Jersey show on September 4, according to Forbes. He performed a song inspired by Columbia University protests and declared support for various regions, including Gaza and the West Bank.

Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, purportedly threatened to cancel Sheeran’s concerts. Despite receiving directives to stop, Macklemore reiterated his stance the next night, clarifying his distinction between targeting Israel and Judaism.

The ensuing backlash led to Macklemore’s removal from the tour, amid ongoing tensions with pro-Israel groups and fellow artists. Kraft later conveyed to NBC News that his actions stemmed from concerns about rhetoric he viewed as harmful to Jewish people. He expressed willingness to discuss peace and mutual goals with Macklemore and committed $2 million to aid Palestinians.

Ed Sheeran attempted to mediate by proposing a bridge-building approach, although this was met with venue resistance. The situation has amplified the spotlight on Macklemore and the broader discourse surrounding free expression.

Robert Kraft, who has connections to former President Trump, indicated his actions aimed to promote peace and address suffering. Despite a fallout following the Capitol riot, Kraft previously supported Trump’s inauguration and attended a film screening at the Kennedy Center with Trump.

Fox News Digital sought comments from Kraft through the New England Patriots’ public affairs office. Reporter Elizabeth Elkind, covering the House of Representatives, penned the story. Follow her on Twitter at @liz_elkind or send tips to [email protected].
