Oval Office Honors Lifeguard for Heroic Rescue

On August 17, 2026, President Trump welcomed 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai to the Oval Office. The two were recognized for their involvement in a dramatic rescue in Santa Cruz, California.

Williams gained attention after his daring rescue of Nathaniel from a rip current on July 25. Despite challenging conditions, Ryder held onto the young boy and worked to guide him safely back to the shore.

President Trump praised Ryder’s courage, expressing admiration for his actions. He also congratulated Nathaniel for enduring the harrowing experience. “We’re honored to have all of you. And again, what you did was incredible,” President Trump remarked, highlighting the widespread attention the rescue received.

Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed deep gratitude during the visit. He described the family’s relief and appreciation for Ryder’s intervention, emphasizing their joy in celebrating Nathaniel’s upcoming 11th birthday. Rai recounted to “CBS Mornings” how perilously close his son was to danger before Ryder’s timely arrival.

During the Oval Office meeting, President Trump acknowledged the essential role of lifeguards. “Maybe lifeguards don’t get the credit they deserve,” he commented.

Reflecting on the experience, Ryder noted that lifeguards rely heavily on their training when facing perilous situations. At 16, Ryder aspires to become a firefighter.
