New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani encountered significant backlash after being booed during a Staten Island pro-police celebration. The criticisms around Mamdani extend beyond the event and focus on his financial proposals for the city, including plans for free childcare amid projected budget deficits.
Controversy Over Columbus Day Parade Invite
The decision to invite Mayor Mamdani to Manhattan’s annual Columbus Day Parade has ignited a protest from Italian-American leaders. The Columbus Citizens Foundation invited Mamdani in hopes of improving relations between City Hall and the Italian-American community. However, Mamdani’s past criticisms of Christopher Columbus have caused a stir among Italians who view the invitation unfavorably.
“Are you kidding me? This is a weak move by the organizers,” remarked Mike Crispi, President of the Italian American Civil Rights League, on social media. “Zohran has shown contempt for our people, and we need to wake up to preserve our culture.”
Crispi’s remarks refer to a 2020 social media post by Mamdani where he posed with his middle finger raised at a statue of Columbus, captioned “Take it down.” Columbus remains a significant historical figure for Italian Americans and symbolizes a connection to their heritage in the United States.
Mixed Reactions to Mamdani’s Attendance
Christopher Loiacono, President of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, stated that they wish to foster a positive relationship with Mamdani’s office. “We hope he will be more open to working with the Italian community,” he told the New York Post.
Councilwoman Joann Ariola criticized Mamdani, questioning his intentions for attending events like the Columbus Day Parade. “This is a man who has made it clear that he doesn’t respect Columbus,” she expressed.
In recent months, Mamdani faced criticism for omitting Little Italy from an ethnic enclave map. After backlash, he updated the map to include the neighborhood. Despite efforts to amend such mistakes, Mamdani continues to face opposition at public events.
Petitions Against His Event Attendance
The Mayor’s presence at public gatherings has increasingly drawn organized opposition. During the annual memorial service at Ground Zero on September 11, family members of victims circulated a petition urging Mamdani to refrain from attending.
Roger Stone, a right-wing political operative, expressed dissatisfaction with Mamdani’s appearance at such events. “Just as Mamdani’s presence at the 9/11 Ceremony was inappropriate, Italian Americans don’t want him on Columbus Day either,” Stone wrote.
Sid Rosenberg, a Jewish radio host, echoed similar sentiments against Mamdani’s involvement. “I will NOT attend this year if he is there,” he stated, urging Italians to take action.
Critics have threatened to organize a competing Columbus Day parade if the Columbus Citizens Foundation does not Withdraw its invitation to the Mayor.
