A tragic event unfolded on September 6 in Fairfield County, Ohio, resulting in the untimely death of Cameron Lyon, a 23-year-old teacher. The incident occurred due to a two-vehicle crash involving a driver previously deported from the United States.
Details of the Crash
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash took place on U.S. Route 33 near U.S. Route 22 in Hocking Township around 6:15 p.m. Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, a 33-year-old Mexican national, allegedly caused the accident by driving a GMC Terrain that veered off the roadway. After overcorrecting, he crossed into the westbound lanes and overturned, colliding with Lyon’s Chevrolet Trax. The GMC caught fire following the collision.
Cameron Lyon’s Impact
Lyon was an educator at Crestline Exempted Village Schools, teaching fifth and sixth graders. The school expressed profound sorrow in a Facebook statement, mourning Lyon’s loss and highlighting the impact he had on the community. Counselors were made available to support grieving students and staff.
Having recently graduated from Otterbein University, Lyon was engaged and embarked on his teaching career shortly before the crash. An online fundraiser has been initiated by his family, who are devastated by his tragic death.
Injuries and Hospitalization
Abrielle Kerns, a passenger in Lyon’s vehicle, sustained extensive injuries and remains hospitalized. Emily Van Voorhis Kerns, a relative, posted updates on Facebook about Abrielle’s condition and highlighted Lyon’s cherished role in the family.
Legal Proceedings for Uribe-Gonzalez
The Department of Homeland Security provided details on Uribe-Gonzalez’s immigration status, revealing his deportation in April 2020, followed by an illegal reentry at an unspecified time and location. Currently held in Fairfield County Jail, ICE has requested notification prior to any potential release.
Initial bond was set at $5 million, but prosecutors sought to hold Uribe-Gonzalez without bond due to the severity of the allegations and public safety concerns. The investigation continues, with charges pending.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin expressed outrage in a press release, condemning the actions of Uribe-Gonzalez and lamenting the loss of Lyon.
