New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has voiced strong opposition against the escalating violence, declaring, “We cannot accept this violence as normal.” This statement followed the tragic incident involving a 12-year-old boy who was shot and killed in the Bronx. According to the NYPD, the boy, unnamed as of Sunday morning, was fatally shot near Elliot Place in Mount Eden. A witness reported hearing five gunshots and saw the young victim collapse from his bike, while the shooter fled in a Jeep, as per ABC 7’s coverage. Despite being rushed to Lincoln Hospital with a shoulder wound, the boy was pronounced dead.
The same incident also left two other individuals injured: a 34-year-old man with a foot injury and a 25-year-old man with a wound on the backside. Both are expected to recover. Following the incident, investigators secured an area around the Wanda Deli at Elliot Place and Walton Avenue.
Family friend Jose Sanchez shared with NBC New York, “They’re great kids who were just riding their bikes and always at home.” The news has deeply affected the community, leaving everyone troubled by the loss.
Mamdani released a statement on X expressing his condolences, “My heart breaks for his family, friends, and all who loved him. Their loss is unimaginable. I am praying for the speedy recovery of the other two victims of this shooting.” He praised hospital staff and the NYPD for their responses to this violent act, emphasizing, “Our children should be able to ride their bikes on a nice summer day in their neighborhood without fear of being shot.”
Sworn in on January 1, Mamdani has been vocal about gun violence in the city. Data released by New York Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch on July 2 highlighted there were 322 shooting incidents with 381 victims up until July, a decrease compared to 397 victims during the same period last year. These statistics, however, were not categorized by age.
On April 1, tragedy struck in Brooklyn with the fatal shooting of seven-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore, in a suspected gang-related attack. The baby was shot while sitting in a stroller as gunfire erupted on a sidewalk in Williamsburg. Mamdani responded with a statement, “Too many children have never grown up into becoming adults.”
Gun violence continued with an incident on July 4 at Coney Island, Brooklyn, where four children aged six to fourteen were among those injured. Gunfire disrupted a family barbecue when a man wearing black and a ski mask opened fire. Mamdani vowed on July 7, “We will find whoever is responsible for this heinous crime and hold them fully accountable.” Subsequently, Robert Smith, 44, faced charges of multiple counts of attempted murder.
Earlier this year on April 17, 15-year-old Jaden Pierre’s death due to gun violence at Roy Wilkins Park in Southeast Queens shocked the community. Additionally, 16-year-old Marquise Byfield was killed in an East New York bodega.
Reflecting on these events, Mamdani has been consistent in condemning gun violence. As mayor-elect in December 2025, he expressed outrage over a shooting at Brown University, Rhode Island. Similarly, in a tweet dated August 25, 2025, while campaigning, he criticized “the scourge of gun violence” following a gang-related incident in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights.
Despite the challenges, Mamdani noted positive developments in New York City’s crime figures, stating on July 2, “Over the past six months, New York City has experienced the safest start to any year on record.” He attributes this to a comprehensive government response, “The data reflects what New Yorkers are feeling on our subways, streets, and across the five boroughs: our whole-of-government approach to public safety is working.”
