A runner in Alaska experienced a harrowing encounter with a brown bear while jogging alone on the Wolverine Bowl trail at Prospect Heights in Anchorage. The woman managed to fend off the bear by using bear spray, as reported by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. She received medical attention at a nearby hospital following the incident.
Biologists visited the scene shortly after the attack occurred. Although they gathered samples, no bears were sighted in the area. The department emphasized the importance of reporting any aggressive or unusual behavior observed in wild animals. Warning signs are now in place along the Prospect Heights trail, advising hikers to steer clear of closed trails.
‘Thick, dense summer foliage can block sightlines, making surprise encounters more likely,’ the department explained. They recommended selecting hiking routes with clear visibility, avoiding areas known to attract bears such as salmon-bearing streams.
For safety when hiking in bear territory, carrying a deterrent like bear spray or a firearm is advised. Hikers should remain in groups, make noise to avoid startling bears, stay alert for bear signs, refrain from approaching them, and ensure pets are leashed.
In the event of a surprise encounter with a bear, particularly one that has cubs or is guarding food, it might react defensively. Signs of an agitated bear include huffing, stomping, teeth popping, excessive salivation, ear flattening, or charging. In such instances, the department advises staying calm, standing your ground, and preparing to use a deterrent if necessary. Speak softly, back away slowly if the bear is stationary, but if it approaches or charges, halt and remain poised, conveying that you are non-threatening. If needed, use your deterrent when the bear is within reach.
This incident follows another bear attack in Anchorage less than a month prior. In the previous case, a woman walking with a friend and three dogs was mauled in the Bear Valley neighborhood near Chugach State Park. This area features steep, unofficial trails with dense vegetation, which limits visibility and heightens the risk of unexpected wildlife encounters. The bear emerged from thick alders, briefly contacted one of the hikers, and then departed. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.
