The New England Patriots, aiming for a championship win since Super Bowl LIII in 2019, face a significant hurdle this season. Wide receiver AJ Brown, a crucial addition to the team acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles, may be sidelined by a serious ankle injury.
The setback occurred during the Super Bowl LX rematch against the Seattle Seahawks. Brown sustained the injury in the second half when a pass to him was disrupted. Trainers and medical staff attended to him on the field for a considerable time. Although he managed to walk off, he was clearly limping.
The Patriots announced his status as questionable to return, pending x-ray results to assess the injury’s severity. Dr. Deepak Chona expressed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Patriots might choose to rest Brown for the remainder of the game due to the type of injury.
Chona suspected a high ankle sprain which is notorious for affecting performance when played through. This kind of injury, according to the Cleveland Clinic, involves tearing or damaging the high ankle ligaments connecting the tibia and fibula. It often results in pain and can hinder activities like walking or climbing stairs.
Recovery from high ankle sprains usually spans six to eight weeks, although athletes may require more time to return to play. Surgery is typically not needed unless the damage is severe.
The Patriots and their fans are undoubtedly anxious about Brown’s condition. His contribution is vital, with over 1,000 receiving yards in six out of his last seven NFL seasons. As they aim for another deep playoff run, quarterback Drake Maye will need Brown’s skills on the field.
