LSU Tigers Step Back from Controversial Plan

The LSU Tigers have decided not to pursue their controversial plan to recruit former NFL players for their team. This decision came after the Southeastern Conference (SEC) targeted coach Lane Kiffin and school officials. The SEC even considered expelling the Tigers from the conference.

A vote on this potential expulsion is scheduled for Thursday. However, there appears to be little interest from either side in parting ways. LSU President Wade Rousse has dismissed the notion of professionals returning to college play as a ‘moot’ issue.

Despite this resolution, LSU’s rivals are relishing the media scrutiny faced by the Tigers. On the Texas A&M radio show “The Aggie Football Hour,” head coach Mike Elko reassured fans that LSU was not leaving the SEC. “LSU will be in the SEC,” Elko stated, according to TexAgs. “LSU will be fired up when we go to Baton Rouge soon. All of those things are going to happen.”

Elko also likened the SEC’s stance to a parental figure disciplining a defiant child. “This is just a little bit of…parenting…going on right now,” he remarked, a comment likely to irritate some LSU fans.

LSU’s attempt to recruit two professional players, Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, violated conference rules. They cited recent court decisions regarding extra eligibility for players from the 2022 recruiting class. The SEC threatened expulsion after significant backlash from other league schools.

Coach Kiffin fueled the controversy with a remark during a halftime interview, questioning the impact of having NFL players, as his team led 31-3. The SEC seems to have asked LSU to envision a future without its traditional rivalries, to which LSU responded in the negative.
