Lincoln Riley Faces a Pivotal Season with USC Trojans

Lincoln Riley’s leadership of the USC Trojans has not been without challenges. His arrival before the 2022 season brought high expectations, given his impressive record at Oklahoma. There, Riley achieved a 55-10 record, 33-7 in conference play, and appeared in four New Year’s Six games, with three consecutive 12-win seasons.

In 2022, USC came close to a playoff opportunity but was thwarted by Caleb Williams’ injury during the Pac-12 Championship Game. Since then, the Trojans have struggled to enter the expanded playoff field. The 2026 season is critical for Riley.

USC’s athletic department now operates under general manager Chad Bowden, and their NIL program has secured the nation’s top recruiting class. However, their challenging schedule tests the patience of fans and stakeholders.

“It’s May, right? But looking at it in May, there’s definitely a real difference. It’s tangible. It’s not just hope,” Riley expressed at recent Big Ten meetings. “The program has taken steps, not only in talent acquisition and building the roster, but there’s also teaching them to win, and the progression that comes with that. I know — I’ve seen — the real steps we’ve taken on the field. I’ve seen the signs off the field.”

Riley has learned and grown since his time at Oklahoma, where he averaged 11 wins annually. He acknowledges that the Trojans have been close to success, suggesting that minor changes could have altered their playoff fate.

“We were close enough last year to taste it,” said Riley. “I mean, literally snaps away from being right in it. I know we have absolutely taken steps. Honestly, now, it’s just time to go do it. It’s time. The program’s ready for it. I caught some flak from saying at the end of the year that I thought we had opened up a window, but it’s true. It’s how I feel.”

Last season, the Trojans missed pivotal opportunities, like leading against Illinois late in the fourth quarter and failing to capitalize against Notre Dame. Games against top teams require that successful snaps go in favor of elite teams, a feat yet to be achieved consistently by USC.

Some fans criticize Riley for certain decisions, such as a risky play call against Notre Dame, leading to a crucial fumble. Despite these setbacks, Riley remains optimistic about this season’s prospects.

This year, USC’s schedule excludes Notre Dame but includes demanding games against Indiana, Penn State, Ohio State, Oregon, and Washington. A rivalry match with UCLA’s new coach and a Wisconsin visit also stand out.

Reaching nine wins might mark a successful season, but Riley’s improvements as a head coach need to translate into at least ten wins and a playoff appearance. Failing to do so could intensify scrutiny of his tenure.
