Anne Hathaway recently shared her experience with a secret medical condition during an appearance on The New York Times’ podcast “Popcast.” The well-known actress divulged that she dealt with significant vision issues throughout her 30s, specifically due to an early-onset cataract. This condition left her “legally blind” in one eye for a decade before she decided to undergo surgery.
“This is maybe too much information,” Hathaway remarked. She revealed, “I was half blind for 10 years.” The impact on her vision was severe enough that she could not see clearly out of her left eye until surgery improved her condition. The actress expressed her amazement at the newfound clarity post-surgery, stating, “I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, cataracts are the clouding of the lens of the eye, which can significantly affect a person’s vision. Clouded vision can resemble looking through a frosty or fogged-up window, complicating tasks like reading, driving, or recognizing facial expressions.
Hathaway called her current vision situation a “miracle.” She emphasized her gratitude for improved eyesight, recognizing how fortunate she feels given that such surgical options might not have been available to past generations.
In recent times, Hathaway was also prompted to address rumors about her undergoing plastic surgery. Despite her preference for avoiding discussions about her personal choices, the actress felt compelled to clarify that she hadn’t made any significant medical decisions regarding cosmetic surgery.
“The speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there,” she noted. Hathaway discussed her desire to focus on activities that bring her happiness and confidence, particularly during public appearances. However, she acknowledged contemplating whether addressing such topics publicly was the right choice.
“Also, by the way, these are huge medical decisions that people are presuming,” Hathaway added. She stressed that her recent hairstyle change was simply two braids, not surgical intervention. Yet, she openly admitted her openness to considering cosmetic procedures, noting, “By the way, the other thing about all this is, I might still get a facelift someday.”
