Saratoga, New York is renowned for its vibrant summer atmosphere. The town comes alive with concerts, diverse dining options, an active nightlife, and most notably, the Saratoga Race Course. This iconic venue attracts top thoroughbreds, jockeys, and trainers every Saturday during the summer.
Whitney Day stands out as a highlight at Saratoga’s summer race meet. This day features several Grade 1 stakes, including the headline event, the Whitney, accompanied by the Test Stakes, Fourstardave Stakes, and Saratoga Derby.
On my initial visit to The Spa this season, my bets on Jim Dandy Day proved unfruitful, resulting in a $100 loss. Resolute to try again, I’m prepared to risk $125 on the upcoming Whitney Day. Below are the details of my betting strategy for races 9 through 12 on Saturday, August 8.
Saratoga Race Course Bet Slip: ‘Whitney Day’
- Test Stakes, Race 9: Bet $20 to Win on #6 On Time Girl.
- Fourstardave Stakes, Race 10: Bet $20 to Win on #3 Zulu Kingdom and $5 Exacta: 3/6.
- Saratoga Derby, Race 11: Bet $10 Across the Board on #1 Glavine ($30 total bet).
- Whitney Stakes, Race 12: Bet $50 to Win on #6 Sovereignty.
Grade 1 Test Stakes, 4:36 p.m. ET Post Time
#6 On Time Girl (7-2) has the advantage with a leading jockey, Irad Ortiz, and trainer, Brad Cox, both top performers at this meet. With two wins and a second in three races at this distance, On Time Girl shows strong performance history. Her tactical speed enables her to succeed regardless of the race pace.
Grade 1 Fourstardave Stakes, 5:14 p.m. ET Post Time
#3 Zulu Kingdom (7-2) presents good value. He has been the top choice in seven of his 11 races, securing eight wins. At Saratoga, he boasts three wins and one third in five starts. His jockey, Flavien Prat, and trainer, Chad Brown, lead in earnings this summer.
Zulu Kingdom’s recent performance included a high Beyer Speed Figure (101) in a tie for the Grade 3 Kelso. #6 Capitol Hill (10-1) features in my exacta bet due to his strong finish, making him a contender in the final stretch.
Grade 1 Saratoga Derby, 5:52 p.m. ET Post Time
#1 Glavine (12-1) shows promising speed figures of 86, 83, and 85 this year. After establishing himself in May, he placed fourth and third at Saratoga. As Glavine continues to improve, his current odds suggest value compared to others in his field.
Grade 1 Whitney Stakes, 6:33 p.m. ET Post Time
#6 Sovereignty (3-1), the reigning Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes champion, underwhelmed with a second and third this year. However, his history at Saratoga is unmatched, boasting three wins. Notably, he bested the favored #1 Magnitude (9-5) by over 20 lengths in last year’s Grade 1 Travers.
Despite a recent loss to Magnitude, Sovereignty’s consistent high-scale performances, such as six consecutive 104+ Beyers, highlight his strength. His past successes, including a major win after his initial starts, reinforce confidence in a repeat victory.
