The Los Angeles Rams are approaching a crucial deadline to establish their 53-man roster for the upcoming NFL season. By August 30, the team must finalize their lineup, facing additional complexity due to the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Donald’s potential return from retirement.
The Rams recently acquired Myles Garrett, sparking excitement about the prospect of pairing him with the former star defensive tackle, Aaron Donald. However, the decision on whether Donald will come out of retirement remains unresolved, complicating the team’s roster strategy.
Benjamin Royer of the Orange County Register reported that the Rams are preparing for both scenarios: Donald returning or remaining retired. Head coach Sean McVay confirmed that roster plans account for both outcomes, emphasizing the team’s adaptability.
“As of Tuesday, there are still no updates for when Donald will come to a decision on returning to the NFL more than two years after retiring,” Royer wrote.
McVay shared that if Donald chooses to return, discussions will focus on his fitness and readiness for play, potentially impacting the team’s opener in Melbourne against the San Francisco 49ers on September 10.
McVay stated, “We’ve had to have a lot of fluidity and flexibility. But I think what’s good is the thing that has served us well is let’s just stay one day at a time.” The Rams remain focused on current preparations, prioritizing each day’s developments over long-term plans.
This uncertainty underscores the importance of being adaptable, a skill McVay has honed over the past decade. The Rams aim to navigate these complexities by focusing on immediate goals while remaining open to future changes.
