On Tuesday, August 4, a massive gathering took place at the Morton Grove Civic Center where hundreds of neighbors, supporters, first responders, and Village staff came together in a true display of community spirit. This event marked the 11th annual National Night Out celebration, expertly hosted by the Morton Grove Police Department, focusing on fostering strong bonds between police officers and the community.

Celebrating Community Unity

Police Chief Mike Weitzel, a pivotal figure in organizing the event, reiterated the importance of National Night Out. Such gatherings evolved from a national initiative introduced in the mid-1980s into a significant annual community engagement. Held on the first Tuesday of August, it offers a relaxed space for locals to connect with police and firefighters.

It’s a chance for area residents to meet their local police officers and firefighters in a relaxed environment, not just during stressful times when help is needed, said Weitzel.

Activities for All Ages

The event, free of charge, catered to attendees of all ages from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. It featured kid-friendly activities including games, touch-a-truck displays, a firefighter hose simulator, rock climbing, an inflatable obstacle course, and pony rides. Attendees also enjoyed safety demonstrations, live music, delicious food including hot dogs and tacos, Kona ice, product giveaways, and a raffle.

Kaila Leslie, a resident, expressed her enthusiasm, saying “We always enjoy National Night Out and wouldn’t miss the great block party and fun for our family while supporting the community.”

Strengthening Relationships

Community Liaison Officers Justin Jurasz and Sean Lang, who coordinated the event, emphasized the significance of building relationships not only among families but also with first responders who keep the community safe. Various information tables, hosted by donors and Village entities such as the Library and Park District, provided valuable insights.

Participants included civic groups like Cub Scouts Pack #228, senior art classes and chair yoga providers, and CIT Illinois Therapy K9 comfort dogs. Even the Citizens Police and Fire Academy Alumni Program joined the festivities.

Educational Opportunities

Attendees benefited from educational talks and demonstrations. The Glenview Public Safety Dispatch Center highlighted the crucial role of 911 dispatchers. Animal Control Officer Kristin Smith provided advice on pet safety and vaccinations. Demonstrations by police officers showcased drone applications in law enforcement including search-and-rescue and emergency response tactics.

Engaging in Governance

Notable attendees included Mayor Janine Witko, Trustees Connie Travis and Rita Minx, and Village Clerk Eileen Scanlon Harford. Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita’s office representative was also present, further indicating the importance of the event.

This event reflects the continuous effort Morton Grove invests in being a strong, welcoming community every day, Witko stated proudly.

Sean Lang, a 14-year Morton Grove Police Officer, remarked on the positive impact of seeing residents in good spirits. He mentioned how this event highlights officers as approachable individuals, moving beyond the distressed contexts often linked with police interactions.
