In July, the contiguous United States recorded its hottest month ever, with an average temperature of 76.89 degrees Fahrenheit (24.94 degrees Celsius). This surpassed the previous record set during the Dust Bowl in July 1936, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The records date back to 1895.
Jeff Masters, a meteorologist with Yale Climate Connections, expressed concern over breaking historical records from the Dust Bowl era, which was marked by severe drought and extreme migration. He noted that current conditions suggest significant climatic problems.
Alaska experienced cooler temperatures, but the Lower 48 states faced widespread heat. The Mountain West, Southwest, Northern Plains, and Southeast reported the most intense heat. NOAA’s chief of monitoring, Russ Vose, confirmed that every state in the Lower 48 was warmer than the 20th-century average by at least 1 degree Fahrenheit (near 0.6 degrees Celsius).
Although agricultural practices exacerbated the Dust Bowl conditions, the current scenario is driven by burning fossil fuels, according to experts. Katharine Jacobs, a climate scientist at the University of Arizona, emphasized that current temperature extremes align with expected climate change patterns.
NOAA highlighted that the record heat was significantly driven by unusually high nighttime temperatures, breaking previous records for hottest minimums by 0.7 degrees. Scientific research identifies hotter nights as a clear indicator of human-driven climate change.
Masters stressed the importance of nighttime temperatures in determining overall heat stress. Without cooler nights, people’s bodies cannot recover adequately, leading to health risks, including increased mortality and disrupted sleep.
While 2026 is slightly cooler than the summer of 2021 through July, the trend indicates that such heat could become the norm. Masters advocates for reducing fossil fuel consumption and investing in adaptation strategies to address these climate challenges.
