Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard, gained recognition as a hero following his remarkable rescue of a child caught in perilous rip currents and powerful surf in Santa Cruz, California. Sumit Rai, the father of the rescued child, has expressed profound appreciation for Williams’ bravery and swift action.
Williams has been invited to the White House to receive a civilian honor for his courageous actions. During an interview, Rai shared a terrifying phone call he received from his 10-year-old son, Nathaniel, stating that he felt as though he was drowning and feared for his life.
Nathaniel was standing near the shoreline at Seabright State Beach when a wave swept him 15 yards into deep waters. The rescue, which lasted significantly longer than depicted in a viral video, showed Williams’ determination to keep the child safe despite the relentless surf conditions.
Witnesses reported that Seabright State Beach was under a high surf advisory. California State Parks reported wave heights of 4 to 6 feet, occasionally reaching 10 feet.
Positioned at Tower 2, Williams utilized a radio to alert others of the situation and swiftly approached the shore, leaving behind his devices and sunglasses. Equipped with fins and a buoy, he dove into the water to reach Nathaniel.
The viral footage captured Williams holding Nathaniel in the tumultuous waves. Williams explained that he initially struggled to pull the boy out because he was limp and the waves were overpowering. Fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen soon joined Williams to assist in navigating the challenging conditions.
Rai commended Williams’ efforts, highlighting the difficulty of moving approximately 100 pounds through crashing waves. Rai expressed that he could never fully repay Williams for his heroic actions.
The lifeguards brought Nathaniel safely to shore and assessed him for injuries. Rai, who was not vacationing with his children, anticipated reuniting with his son and expressed immense gratitude towards Williams.
After the rescue video received national attention, President Donald Trump acknowledged Williams’ bravery, suggesting he should visit the White House. Rai supported the idea, emphasizing his appreciation and admiration for Williams’ life-saving actions.
Reflecting on his role, Williams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return Nathaniel to his family safely. He highlighted the importance of lifeguards, noting that he is thankful to work alongside colleagues who perform similar rescues routinely.
During the weekend, lifeguards from California State Parks’ Santa Cruz District completed 34 rescues and over 5,000 preventative contacts. The dedication and efforts of these lifeguards remain vital in ensuring community safety along the coastline.
