Michigan Quarterback Bryce Underwood Under Scrutiny After Narrow Victory

As the college football season kicks off, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood finds himself under unexpected scrutiny. In a dramatic season opener against Western Michigan, a pivotal moment saw Underwood rescue the team from what could have been a historic defeat.

Michigan narrowly avoided a major upset with a 13-12 win, thanks to Underwood’s last-second Hail Mary pass to wide receiver JJ Buchanan. Initially, Underwood’s first attempt sailed out of the end zone, but a clock review granted Michigan one extra second. With it, Underwood executed a perfect pass, securing victory.

Despite this thrilling win, Underwood’s position as QB1 is not guaranteed according to head coach Kyle Whittingham. He made it clear that ongoing performance will determine the team’s lineup.

“He’s our QB right now, but it’s not infinite,” Whittingham said. “We must see improvement across the team, including from Bryce. Positions are earned through performance.”

Underwood, a highly-touted sophomore, inked a significant NIL deal worth $12 million. With such expectations, benching him might seem unlikely, but Whittingham’s comments indicate a readiness to challenge his players to elevate their game.

In the opener, Underwood showcased his skills, throwing for 170 yards, rushing for another 47 yards, and scoring both of Michigan’s touchdowns. However, he also threw an interception, revealing areas for improvement.

Last season, Underwood threw 11 touchdowns against nine interceptions, a performance he aims to surpass this year. As the season progresses, scrutiny will remain high on both Underwood and the Wolverines.
