Deion Sanders Faces Possible Absence from Colorado Buffaloes’ Season Opener

The Colorado Buffaloes are nearing their season opener against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. A legal issue may influence head coach Deion Sanders’ availability for the game.

Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today reports that Sanders may need to testify in his son Shilo Sanders’ bankruptcy case, scheduled from August 31 to September 4. This coincides with the Buffaloes’ game preparations.

The judge noted the conflict with Colorado’s season opener and anticipated Sanders might contest the subpoena to testify.

Colorado’s season begins on September 3, requiring travel to Georgia Tech. Sanders’ absence could impact both the preparation and the game.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio suggests that Sanders might avoid missing any time if allowed to record and present his testimony via video.

If either or both sides aren’t willing to cooperate, Sanders may need to pause practices to attend court in Denver.

The University of Colorado has not commented despite several media inquiries.

Deion Sanders’ presence on the sideline is crucial for the team’s success. The Buffaloes cannot afford a slow start, having concluded last season with a 3-9 record without key players Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. Sanders faces heightened expectations following a five-year, $54 million contract extension signed in March.

In three seasons at Colorado, Sanders holds a 16-21 record, including 9-18 against Big 12 teams. His lone bowl appearance resulted in a loss at the 2024 Alamo Bowl against BYU.

Critics point out Sanders’ struggles without Shedeur and Hunter. He posts a 36-15 record with them compared to 7-12 without them.
