Michelle Obama, former First Lady, faced criticism after commenting on her daughters in a podcast with Jon Stewart. The remarks drew attention amid ongoing national discussions about motherhood.
During the podcast, Stewart shared that parenting brought meaning and structure to his life, asking Obama if she missed those aspects. Obama’s response was, “I’m good,” indicating she enjoyed having control over her own schedule without her adult daughters at home.
California Republican Party Delegate Elizabeth Barcohana expressed concern, interpreting Obama’s comments as relief rather than fatigue from motherhood’s demands. “Resentment seems to come through,” Barcohana noted, especially considering the sensitive national conversation around motherhood.
Obama emphasized she loved her daughters, planned a dinner with them, and contrasted her reaction to her husband Barack’s emotional response when their daughters left for college.
“I don’t miss them…But Barack cried when they went to college,” she said. “Now Friday nights aren’t wrecked with terror and fear about, ‘Where are you?'”
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh criticized Obama, suggesting she appeared eager for her children to leave due to even minor demands on her time, labeling her as narcissistic.
Political commentator Link Lauren echoed Walsh’s sentiments, stating Obama’s lifestyle complaints seemed out of touch with her privileged position.
Obama defended her perspective by highlighting her daughters’ independence and her past dedication to raising them. “I’ve had so much quality time with my children,” she said, explaining her appreciation for her current schedule.
She also acknowledged her and Barack’s effort to prioritize their daughters during his presidency, illustrating their commitment as parents during crucial years.
