Man’s Viral Video Reveals Shake Shack Kiosk Pricing Error in Utah

A Utah man revealed a startling incident at a Shake Shack kiosk, which led to a viral video showing unexpected price hikes. Brian Powell, 45, initially didn’t believe his wife when she claimed Shake Shack prices increased after she opted not to leave a tip.

Powell explained to Fox News Digital that during their wait for a flight out of Salt Lake City, his wife bought three milkshakes at the airport’s Shake Shack. ‘My wife mentioned, You won’t believe this, but they charged me more after I didn’t tip,’ Powell recalled. He spoke from London, where he vacationed with his wife. Initially skeptical, Powell decided to inspect the matter himself.

Powell, a frequent visitor to the location, admitted he had never experienced anything similar. Back at the kiosk, he recreated the order while recording the event on his phone. His video documents two of the three shakes listed at $5.99 each, followed by an update revealing a price adjustment to $6.49 after selecting ‘no tip.’ This marked a 50-cent increase per shake.

‘It is not Shake Shack policy, nor that of our licensees, to increase the price when no tip is given,’ a Shake Shack spokesperson clarified.

The airport Shake Shack, run by HMSHost, acknowledged the error resulted from a technology glitch, now resolved. Powell confessed uncertainty over whether this was intentional or accidental. Having visited the Shake Shack before, he found the situation suspicious, especially after tipping there previously.

The video rapidly gained attention as Powell edited it during a flight delay. Comments flooded his inbox, making it challenging to keep pace with his social media responses. In Powell’s opinion, tipping culture may have become excessive, as showcased by this experience.

Powell expressed his frustration over the unexpected charge. He hopes to revisit the kiosk upon returning to Salt Lake City to confirm resolution of the issue.
