A manhunt is ongoing for a suspect after a tragic incident at Berlin’s Pride festival on Saturday night. A vehicle was driven into a crowd, causing the death of a woman and injuring 16 others. The attack occurred around 10 p.m. local time in Tiergarten park, near the Brandenburg Gate. In addition to the vehicle attack, authorities reported several stabbings took place.

Berlin’s fire department spokesman, Dominik Pretz, provided updates on the condition of the injured. Three people have life-threatening injuries, while eight are seriously injured, and five have minor injuries. Police released a photo of the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Abdul B., noting his association with “Islamist circles” in Berlin.

The suspect is described as slim, standing approximately 1.9 meters tall, with black hair, wearing a black hoodie and white pants. Authorities advised the public to avoid direct contact as he may be armed and dangerous.

Police spokesperson Florian Nath indicated the search efforts are proceeding swiftly. However, no specific motives have been identified. A white vehicle, believed to be involved in the attack, was found crashed into a tree and is currently within a police cordon.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has condemned the attack, labeling it a “heinous act” against societal kindness and tolerance. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt expressed shock at the “cowardly, abhorrent attack” on peaceful celebrants. Alfonso Pantisano, Berlin state government’s Queer Liaison Officer, remarked that Saturday was meant to celebrate joy, visibility, and freedom.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered sympathy to the victims and called the Pride event a symbol of “freedom, dignity, and equality.” She emphasized the right of individuals to live and love without fear.

The attack led to the premature cancellation of Pride events, initially planned to continue throughout the night. Thousands had gathered in Berlin for what is known as one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations. The parade had passed through the park earlier that day.
