Malibu Declares Emergency Following Sinkhole at Nicolas Cage’s Residence

The city of Malibu has declared a local emergency due to a massive and expanding sinkhole at the oceanfront residence of actor Nicolas Cage. This development has led to evacuation orders for 31 homes in the area. The incident occurred on Sea Level Drive with the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s departments responding around 5:45 a.m.

Real estate records confirm that the property is owned by the actor known for roles in “Spider-Noir” and “Pig.” Although an attempt was made, Cage’s representative could not be reached for a comment.

By the evening, the sinkhole had grown to about 25 feet in depth and 30 by 60 feet in width. Officials have warned of worsening conditions due to high tides and rain from Tropical Storm Marie. An emergency declaration was issued, citing the imminent danger posed to nearby homes in the gated community near Lechuza Beach.

Seven residences have been red-tagged because of unsafe conditions, and 24 others face red-tagging due to compromised vehicle access. The city stated in its declaration that the collapsed roadway section severely limits emergency personnel access. The narrow remaining roadway cannot accommodate large emergency vehicles like fire engines, posing a significant risk to public safety.

Malibu High School has opened as a temporary shelter for affected residents. Gas services have been halted, and officials caution that water services might also be discontinued as necessary.

The duration of the evacuation order is currently unknown. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for high surf and coastal flooding, lasting until 11 p.m. for the Malibu coast, L.A. County beaches, and surrounding areas. Forecasts predict breaking waves between 4 to 7 feet, with some reaching up to 8 feet, posing life-threatening risks and likely causing beach erosion and flooding in low-lying coastal regions.

The emergency declaration also highlights the threat from this fall and winter’s El Niño event, stating, “A strengthening ‘super’ El Niño brings a high risk of record sea levels, severe coastal flooding, and dramatic beach narrowing to the California coast this winter.”

Cage, an acclaimed actor, has earned an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his performance in the 1995 film “Leaving Las Vegas.” His series “Spider-Noir” on Prime Video, though critically favored, has recently been canceled.
