During the final round of the 3M Open, former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover finished T-57 in Minnesota, and his actions on the 10th hole gained attention. After sinking a 10-foot birdie putt, he removed his shoes before retrieving his golf ball. This act left many spectators puzzled.

Some speculated this was a protest against the AimPoint green-reading system, which Glover does not favor. However, his actions were rooted in respect for fellow players. Glover, known for wearing metal spikes, was asked by the PGA Tour to be considerate of spike marks on the greens.

“Alright, let’s clear this up. For 23 years on the PGA Tour, I’ve worn spikes. 23 years ago, most of us did. It hasn’t been that long since we were NOT allowed to tap them down. Yesterday was the first time I’ve ever had a complaint,” Glover stated humorously on Instagram.

He explained that due to bent grass greens at the 3M Open, spike marks were more noticeable, and he wanted to avoid damaging the putting surface. Glover mentioned that players are now allowed to tap down spike marks, contrary to some assumptions made by others about his motivations.

“My demonstration yesterday had nothing to do with Aimpoint. I took my shoes off to get my ball out of the hole because that was literally the only way to not make any marks around the hole,” he clarified.

Glover’s statement highlighted his discontent with discussions revolving around what he considered a minor issue, overshadowing other topics, such as the performance of fellow golfer Jackson Koivin.

As Glover prepares for the upcoming Rocket Classic, he plans to continue wearing metal spikes, noting that any marks can be tapped down by players following him.
