“There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton,” McConnell said, according to The Associated Press.

Beshear also missed the event, addressing criticism that focused on his absence while ignoring questions about McConnell. Beshear defended his absence by noting he chose to watch his son play baseball instead.
