Graham Platner, having secured the Democratic nomination in the Maine Senate race, has found himself amidst various controversies. These issues have created unease among Democrats eager to win a crucial Senate seat. Platner, a former Marine and first-time candidate, started his campaign in August 2025, positioning himself as a populist contender against five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins. Despite controversies, including past inflammatory Reddit posts and a tattoo with Nazi links, he gained an edge after Maine Governor Janet Mills withdrew from the primary race. Recent reports of inappropriate personal conduct, however, continue to challenge his candidacy.
Early Challenges in the Campaign
Platner launched his campaign as a populist, but soon faced backlash over old Reddit posts. These posts were perceived as dismissive of military sexual assault and contained derogatory remarks about rural White Mainers. Platner, attributing his behavior to mental health struggles post-military service, apologized and urged voters to consider his current self over past mistakes. Kevin Brown, campaign manager, and Ronald Holmes, finance director, later resigned, the former due to personal reasons and the latter citing professional differences.
Attack Ads and Controversial Comments
In March 2026, Governor Mills launched attack ads highlighting Platner’s problematic Reddit comments. These ads emphasized statements Platner made in 2013 about women’s responsibility to avoid unwanted sexual encounters. Mills argued that such comments made Platner vulnerable to Republican criticism.
Further Allegations and Defense
By April 2026, Governor Mills suspended her campaign due to financial constraints, endorsing Platner as the Democratic candidate. Shortly after, reports emerged of Platner sending explicit texts during his marriage. He admitted to early marital mistakes but emphasized his work towards reconciliation with his wife, Amy Gertner, who publicly supported him.
Allegations of Volatile Relationships
The New York Times later reported allegations from three of Platner’s ex-girlfriends, describing troubled relationships, including accusations of physical intimidation. Platner denied these allegations, pointing to his struggle with PTSD as a factor in his past behavior. These reports further fueled Democratic concerns over his suitability as a candidate.

Despite the turmoil, Platner won the Democratic nomination on June 9, 2026. In his victory speech, he emphasized that the campaign was more about collective movement than personal controversy. His success, however, hangs on the possibility of further scandals, with a July 13 deadline looming for any potential decision to withdraw from the race.
