Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp Update: Receiver Injuries

The Kansas City Chiefs recently faced a tense moment during their training camp. Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen experienced a collision that appeared serious but initial assessments revealed a shin bruise with no severe damage. Reports from ESPN, based on sources, confirmed that Allen avoided any fractures or tears.

Cyrus Allen wasn’t the only receiver with an injury scare. Xavier Worthy also encountered trouble during practice. Worthy landed awkwardly on his shoulder after catching a deep pass near the end zone. This was during an 11-on-11 drill. Worthy previously faced shoulder issues, initially injuring it early in his NFL career. He collided with Travis Kelce in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers, leading to an offseason procedure.

Allen’s incident occurred while practicing special team drills, involving a pooch punt. He and Kaiir Elam, lined up as gunners, collided near the goal line. Elam walked away, but Allen needed assistance to leave the field.

“I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on a special teams drill,” said Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub. “We’ll see how he is. He’s really doing well on offense, and he’s doing well for me too.”

Despite the setback, Toub noted Allen was pushing hard for a spot on the team. Allen performed well as both a gunner and returner. This strong performance put him in contention for a significant role this season. Toub mentioned that it’s standard for rookies to participate in special team activities until they secure their place as key players on offense or defense.

Drafted in the fifth round, Allen has quickly become a favored target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Early in the camp, he led the team’s wide receivers in catches during team drills.
