Trump commented, “Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL.” Furthermore, he mentioned Israel supports the U.S. commitment in reaching a deal with Iran to end the war. Tehran has not made any public remarks about Trump’s statement.
This announcement represents another shift in the conflict’s timeline. Only a day before, Trump suggested readiness to resume significant military actions. The U.S. and Israel initiated attacks on Iran in February, aiming to dismantle its missile capabilities and stop it from acquiring nuclear weapons. The conflict’s stated objectives have shifted frequently.
An interim deal in June aimed to cease fighting and set the groundwork for a permanent resolution, yet it fell apart as Iran renewed attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement came after Trump’s call with Saudi crown prince.
Earlier, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, concerned about the possible escalation with Iran, spoke with Trump. The Saudi leader worried that U.S. strikes on Iran could lead to retaliatory attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure.
A source familiar with the discussion indicated that the crown prince sought clarity on Trump’s potential actions against Iran. A White House official confirmed the conversation occurred but provided no further details.
The crown prince dispatched his brother, Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, to Washington to discuss Iran’s strategy with Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Trump to persist in the campaign against Iran during their meeting in Washington.
The ongoing conflict has become politically challenging for Trump as the midterm elections approach. The U.S. military’s recent prevention of an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan has increased tensions. Trump expressed frustration, noting a firm stance against Iran until submission.
In a social media post, Trump stated the U.S. military was “locked and loaded” and ready to demonstrate unprecedented “Military Terror, Strength, and Power.” The State Department issued alerts for Americans in 10 countries, recommending heightened caution due to escalating tensions with Iran, warning of potential flight cancellations and other disruptions.
Amid these developments, Kuwait’s military reported responding to Iranian drone attacks targeting vital facilities. Similarly, the British Navy noted attacks on a tanker and an explosion near another vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, with no casualties reported.
