Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar has denied allegations that she was involved in a large fraud scheme. This follows Vice President JD Vance’s claim that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating her. Omar told Newsweek that the assertion she knew about the $250 million meals scam is false.
“Any claim that I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false,” Omar stated. She expressed outrage over the scam that funneled millions of dollars away from feeding needy children. Omar emphasized that she demanded accountability from the USDA once the fraud emerged.
Newsweek has contacted the DOJ for further comments.
Allegations Against Omar: Key Details
Aimee Bock, who founded the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, has accused Omar of involvement in the scheme. Bock, convicted of conspiracy and fraud in March 2025, spoke from jail, implying Omar knew about fraudulent claims exploiting pandemic funds. Bock maintained she tried to warn officials and didn’t knowingly participate in fraud.
Understanding the MEALS Act
The MEALS Act was introduced by Omar in March 2020. It enabled the USDA to waive certain school meal requirements. Bock claimed Omar facilitated continued fraud by extending waivers. Omar strongly denied any misconduct, noting the bipartisan nature of the act. It was signed into law by President Trump, who also set the program’s regulations.
Omar stated, “I’m grateful that Aimee Bock and those involved are being held accountable for defrauding taxpayers and betraying vulnerable children.”
The Minnesota Fraud Report
Minnesota state representatives released a report criticizing Governor Tim Walz’s administration for fostering an environment where fraud thrived. The report also held Omar accountable due to the effects of the MEALS Act. A federal investigation by the Biden administration began in 2022, resulting in over 57 convictions.
Ongoing Criticism from Vance and Trump
Prominent Republicans like Donald Trump and JD Vance have accused Omar of various frauds, including immigration fraud by marrying her brother. These claims remain unsubstantiated. Trump previously suggested Omar be denaturalized and deported. Efforts in Congress aim to expel non-native-born members.
On Tuesday, Vance announced the DOJ’s investigation into Omar, reiterating these immigration fraud claims. “We’re going to investigate it,” Vance said, stressing potential prosecution.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The DOJ has not announced an official probe into Omar yet. Aimee Bock awaits sentencing, with prosecutors pursuing a 100-year term. Bock conveyed through email her reliance on faith and reflection with loved ones during this period.
