Hasan Piker Criticizes New Jersey Gov. Sherrill Over ICE Protests

Marxist commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker criticized New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill during a Sunday livestream. He accused the Democratic governor of supporting the Trump administration’s immigration policies through her actions regarding anti-ICE protests at a Newark detention center.

Sherrill had defended deploying state police to control demonstrations outside Delaney Hall, an ICE facility. She stated she would prevent unrest, ensuring ICE had no pretext for expanded immigration actions. Her remarks were aired during a news segment Piker reacted to on stream.

“I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE a pretext,” Sherrill said.

Piker mocked the governor’s explanation, suggesting her actions were akin to helping ICE by herself. He criticized the centrist Democratic Party for such responses, arguing this reflected broader political tendencies.

During ongoing anti-ICE demonstrations at Delaney Hall, activists alleged detainees faced poor conditions, claims disputed by the Department of Homeland Security. Piker accused Sherrill of advancing Trump’s policies and using state police against protestors.

He described the state troopers on horseback in anti-riot gear as acting alongside Trump initiatives, accusing them of being harsh towards New Jersey residents.

Piker also accused authorities of mishandling journalists covering the protests, citing an instance involving an injured Associated Press photographer.

He criticized Democratic lawmakers for their role in immigration policy enforcement funding, advocating for systemic change and calling for election of officials willing to challenge the status quo.

Piker has been active in campaigning for candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. He expressed support for billionaire gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer and quoted Mao Zedong during his broadcast.

Earlier, he defended New Jersey congressional candidate Adam Hamamy, following scrutiny over his background. Sherrill’s office did not comment on the issue. Greg Wehner of Fox News Digital reported the story.
