On Friday, President Trump made an uncommon decision by endorsing both candidates in the South Carolina Republican runoff for governor. This move came after he initially supported one of them.
President Trump first threw his support behind Pamela Evette, South Carolina’s lieutenant governor, in May. His endorsement has been a sought-after asset in Republican Senate and House primaries this year.
However, Trump’s action of backing both runoff candidates highlights his mixed achievements in this year’s gubernatorial races. Despite his endorsement of Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, she did not avoid a runoff. In response, he announced on Truth Social that he would also back her opponent, Alan Wilson. Wilson has served as South Carolina’s attorney general for fifteen years.
I can’t hurt one of them by only Endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to Endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson!
Trump added that either candidate would be a good choice. Shortly after Trump’s statement, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina endorsed Mr. Wilson, signaling further momentum for his candidacy.
Polls prior to the runoff showed Mr. Wilson leading Ms. Evette. With Trump’s endorsement, his position may strengthen even more as the runoff approaches.
