Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman experienced a frightening incident in a game against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. During the top of the eighth inning, Freeman attempted to catch a pop fly but lost awareness of his position in foul territory. As he tried to catch the ball, he tumbled into the Royals’ dugout steps.

After his fall, both the Dodgers and Royals players, along with trainers, quickly came to check on Freeman’s condition. Despite the scare, he received a standing ovation as he managed to climb back up the steps and return to the field. However, Freeman exited the game later as the Dodgers secured a 4-2 victory.

I didn’t hit my head, so that was the key part there, Freeman told reporters post-game. I am sore. Kneecaps are sore. Shoulder is sore. Hand sore. Wrist sore. I mean, I fell. (But) I’m in good spirits.

Freeman explained that he lost track of the dugout railing while attempting to catch Isaac Collins’ pop-up. I went to lean, like I was going to lean against the rail to catch the ball — and obviously there was no rail, he added.

As the Dodgers prepare for an important four-game series against the top National League team, the Milwaukee Brewers, manager Dave Roberts remarked on the situation. I think that we really dodged a bullet, he said. Very scary visually. For right now, he’s in good spirits, which I think is a good sign. Just kind of total body soreness.

The Dodgers’ performance has been strong, as they improved to a 73-48 record, maintaining an 8.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.
