Under the social media handle Flatbush Girl, Adina Sash leverages her online presence to name and denounce men who refuse to give their wives a Jewish divorce. Sash serves as both an activist and influencer, striving to aid Orthodox women she views as trapped in marriages.
The Orthodox influencer operates with an internet-savvy strategy, identifying and calling out men who won’t allow their wives to obtain religious divorces, known as a get. Credit for this movement partly goes to Ahmed Gaber, who documented Sash’s efforts.
On a specific day in March, Sash saw an opportunity to make an impact. She received multiple Instagram messages about a man called Nathan Gettisberg. He had appeared on a well-known podcast discussing Jewish divorce, but listeners identified him as Raphi Stein, embroiled in a contentious separation and accused of withholding a get from his wife.
Sash is an outspoken advocate for agunot, meaning “chained women.” She viewed Stein as a get refuser, noting that he was casually discussing Jewish divorce to a large, community-centric audience. She found this approach both overly confident and cruel.
Instead of reaching out directly to Stein or his wife, Adeena Kohn, Sash started by condemning the podcast network Living L’Chaim and asking her 100,000 followers for more details about the situation. Sash discovered Kohn’s identity shortly after initiating her campaign and learned from Kohn’s friend that she wanted privacy.
Sash was unfazed by Kohn’s need for discretion. She had already launched multiple campaigns for agunot, occasionally receiving compensation for her efforts. In this instance, with significant attention on Stein and without Kohn’s direct involvement, Sash chose to crowdsource funds for further action.
