Glen Hansard, the acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter and Academy Award winner, has died at the age of 56. His management confirmed that he passed away in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. The incident occurred early Wednesday, according to Irish police.
ATC Management expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying, “With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Glen Hansard in the early hours of this morning.” The authorities reported a single-vehicle crash in Lucan, near Dublin, around 4:30 a.m. Despite immediate treatment at the scene, Hansard was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Investigations continue, with police seeking witnesses.
Hansard, born in Dublin in 1970, started his music career busking in the city. He gained acting prominence in the 1991 film “The Commitments,” playing a youthful member of a Dublin soul band. His significant breakthrough came with the 2007 indie musical film “Once,” where he collaborated with Markéta Irglová on the soundtrack. They both starred in the film and won an Oscar for Best Original Song with “Falling Slowly.” This success led to a Broadway adaptation of “Once,” which ran from 2012 to 2015 and won eight Tony Awards.
Off the screen, Hansard led The Frames, a well-regarded rock band, and performed with Irglová as the duo The Swell Season. His solo career included five albums, such as “Didn’t He Ramble,” which was Grammy-nominated for Best Folk Album in 2016. His television appearances on CBS’s “Saturday Sessions” showcased his ability as a performer throughout the years.
In 2025, Hansard reunited with Irglová to release “Forward,” their first album in 16 years as The Swell Season. His notable performances include singing “Fairytale Of New York” with Lisa O’Neill at Shane MacGowan’s funeral in 2023, creating memorable moments.
Hansard was known for his annual Christmas Eve charity busk in Dublin benefiting the Dublin Simon Community, which mourned his loss. They praised his commitment to addressing homelessness, stating, “For us, he was a true advocate for our work and a giant in the fight against homelessness.”
Hansard is survived by his wife and young son. In a 2023 interview, he reflected on fatherhood, saying it had “upturned everything that I know in the greatest way possible.” Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin extended his condolences on social media, acknowledging Hansard’s contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape.
