More than two million troops from Russia and Ukraine have been either killed or wounded in the ongoing conflict between the two nations, which began in February 2022. The study, released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies based in Washington, provides a staggering look at the cost of this war.
According to the study, Russia has experienced the greater losses, with 1.4 million soldiers killed or injured. Among these, 450,000 were fatalities, which is four times the number of American deaths in wars since World War II.
Ukrainian forces have suffered between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties, with deaths ranging from 125,000 to 150,000. The numbers presented highlight the severe impact the war has had on both countries.
Officials have noted the difficulty in accurately estimating casualty numbers due to the lack of transparent reporting. Russia is thought to underreport its losses, while Ukraine does not publicly share official casualty figures. This study has utilized data from American and British government estimations, alongside other sources.
Despite these heavy losses, Russian progress in Ukraine is described as slow. In some areas, Russian troops are advancing at a rate of less than 165 feet a day. February marked a significant period for Ukraine, as it gained more territory than it lost for the first time since 2023, particularly in offensives conducted in the southern region.
