Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh on Inflation and Price Stability

Kevin Warsh, chairman of the Federal Reserve since May, is committed to achieving price stability. He emphasized this during a recent forum in Sintra, Portugal, hosted by the European Central Bank. Warsh noted that inflation concerns have decreased since he assumed his role.

“Inflation expectations have declined over the initial four weeks of my tenure,” Warsh stated at the gathering of international policymakers and economists. Alongside him on the panel were Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, and Tiff Macklem, head of the Bank of Canada.

Globally, central bankers are addressing the inflation surge sparked by rising energy costs from the conflict in Iran and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence affecting prices. Although a preliminary cease-fire between the U.S. and Iran has reduced oil prices to pre-conflict levels, core inflation, which excludes volatile sectors like food and energy, remains high in the U.S.

Policymakers face a challenging decision: whether to raise interest rates to curb inflation or wait for natural adjustments. This deliberation is particularly pertinent as they seek to understand the best course of action for economic stability.
