First Day of School Experiences Across the U.S.

The start of the school year marks an important transition for millions of students. Approximately 54 million students return to school across the nation, each school celebrating the first day in its own unique way. Here are glimpses into first-day experiences from schools in Los Angeles, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Virginia.

Los Angeles, California

At Micheltorena Street Elementary School, the tradition of welcoming kindergarteners a day early to help them adjust continues. Principal Nichole Sakellarion started this initiative 11 years ago to ease the transition for young students. Fifth graders act as ‘toolbox coaches,’ guiding new kindergarteners through their first day. Gerald Gomez-Reina, a fifth grader, shares calming strategies and offers comforting gestures using his stuffed animal, Rocket the Raccoon. The early welcome results in fewer tears from students on the official first day of school.

Edmond, Oklahoma

Families gather in a park to form a ‘bike bus’ to Will Rogers Elementary School instead of the usual bus ride or carpool. This initiative encourages cycling as a mode of transportation for students. First grader Hayden Raupe and his brother Owen find biking more efficient and fun than waiting in car lines.

Beaverton, Oregon

Beaverton High School opens a new building featuring advanced facilities while preserving historical elements like the 110-year-old bell. The new design aims to maintain a welcoming atmosphere with features such as adjustable classroom lights, ample natural light, and a student-created mosaic for easy navigation. Sophomore Andrew Perez appreciates the warm and vibrant environment of their new school setting.

Charles City County, Virginia

Charles City Elementary rolls out the red carpet for students’ arrival. The school hosts a ‘boo-hoo breakfast’ for parents, offering them a place to share emotions on their children’s first school day. Preschool teacher Kelly Orrell reads “The Kissing Hand” to comfort her young students, helping them express and manage their emotions.

These stories highlight the diverse and inventive ways schools help students and families ease into each new school year.
