The Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe presents a transformative seasonal exhibit, where large iridescent bubbles take center stage. The exhibit is an immersive experience called “Evanescent,” part of the “Shimmering Summer” display. Visitors can explore it from June 6 to September 20.
Designed by the Australian duo Atelier Sisu, the installation highlights life’s ephemerality through bubble sculptures. These artworks integrate naturally with the sprawling 385-acre garden. Associate Vice President Jodi Zombolo emphasizes the exhibit’s playful interaction with nature.
The exhibit not only provides visual delight but is part of the garden’s research into how art and nature can interact. Atelier Sisu, known for abstract forms utilizing light and sound, will feature in a U.S. botanical garden for the first time. They conceived the idea for “Evanescent” during the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing inspiration from the fleeting nature of bubbles.
Starting June 6, the exhibit will coincide with weekend events that include bubble performances, glass blowing, hula-hoop artists, and live music. Activities engage families, providing interactions with the sculptures such as touching and walking beneath them.
The bubble installations will be displayed at key locations within the garden, including the area south of the Buehler Enabling Garden and around the Serpentine Bridge. The Visitor Center and Festival Field serve as major host areas.
During the opening weekend, events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. enrich the exhibit experience. The Garden View Cafe will offer themed refreshments like “bubble skewers” and bubble tea.
Additional summer events at the garden include music nights on the Esplanade on Mondays and Wednesdays, and game nights every Thursday starting June 18. Late August will feature the Heirloom Tomato Fest.
The garden opens from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and members enjoy access from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entry fees range from $22.95 to $24.95 for adults, based on residency. Child ticket prices vary from $14.95 to $16.95, and children under two enter free.
Jodi Zombolo is looking forward to seeing the exhibit unfold throughout the summer, as it is featured in multiple locations. This initiative offers a unique way to experience art and the natural beauty of the garden.
