Stress Management Workshops for Migrant Workers in Dubai

In Dubai, a free stress-management class provides a brief respite for laborers grappling with debt, loneliness, long hours, and lately, the fear of missile attacks.

Laxmi Parekh has conducted mental health sessions for Dubai’s migrant workers over the past two years. Recently, she included discussions about regional conflicts in her workshops.

On a recent Sunday, Ms. Parekh stood under flickering lights in a cafeteria within a local housing compound. Her audience included painters, carpenters, and electricians. She introduced the topic of stress management.

Ms. Parekh asked the group, “Who knows what’s been happening here for the last 43 days?” A participant replied, “War situation.”

The conflict began on February 28, with Iran launching missiles and drones toward the UAE more than any other nation. The attacks have resulted in at least 10 civilian deaths and 230 injuries, according to the UAE’s defense ministry. Many of those affected are migrant workers, like those in Ms. Parekh’s session.

Ms. Parekh has been conducting these weekly sessions in migrant-worker dormitories. Besides her IT job, she volunteers with SmartLife, a nonprofit that offers English lessons, mentorship, and social activities for blue-collar migrants. The organization receives financial support from employers and money transfer firms assisting workers in sending money home.

As tensions rose in March, Ms. Parekh adapted her workshops to address the conflict. She asked the 40 attendees, mostly from India, Pakistan, and Nepal, “How many of you are scared?”
