El Niño’s Influence Extends Until Spring
Current climate models reveal that El Niño will endure through fall, winter, and into spring 2027. In recent media briefings, Columbia University climate scientist Azhar Ehsan provided a chart demonstrating a near-certain probability of El Niño persisting until spring, noted at 100% to 99%. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center corroborates these expectations, predicting El Niño to continue for roughly six more months.
Long and Strong El Niño Impact
This El Niño is not only set to stay for an extended period but also to strengthen substantially. It is accelerating faster than any previous El Niño recorded and may achieve super strength by fall or winter, according to Brian James, Nexstar’s chief meteorologist. Currently affecting hurricane seasons, it boosts Pacific activity while quieting the Atlantic.
Winter Weather Implications
El Niño’s effect varies across U.S. regions. Northern states may experience drier and warmer conditions than usual, whereas southern states could see cooler and wetter weather. While some colder air and snow might affect central and northern parts, the overall pattern indicates reduced snow across the northern states.
El Niño’s Evolving Strength
Although El Niño’s influence is expected for several months, its intensity will fluctuate. The Climate Prediction Center foresees a decline from very strong to strong by early spring, eventually moderating thereafter.
