Changing Winters in Arachova: Impact and Adaptation

Arachova, a village in Greece known for its ski resort, has been experiencing significant changes in snowfall. Giannis Stathas, the mayor, recalls how snowfall previously hindered basic activities like attending school. Snow now falls at much higher altitudes than before. Such change is attributed to climate variability, specifically greenhouse gas emissions affecting temperature.

Research by Konstantis Alexopoulos, a snow hydrologist, highlights a decline in snow cover. His findings, based on satellite imagery from agencies like NASA, show a more than 50% decline in snow cover since the mid-1980s. Snow serves as a natural reservoir, vital for sustaining water supplies during dry seasons, especially critical for Mediterranean climates.

Declines in snow cover can reduce water availability since snow acts like a savings account, accumulating and releasing water gradually. Alexopoulos’s study, among the first extensive research on Greek mountains, was challenging due to accessibility and maintenance of consistent data.

The declining snow affects local communities, including Arachova, where water shortages are increasingly common. Aktida Koritou, a restaurant owner, notes increased local awareness around water conservation. The town faces drying springs and depleted reservoirs, particularly during late summer.

Authorities are adapting to less snow by considering small dams and snow retention measures. Additionally, less snow leads to drier vegetation, increasing fire hazards, formerly rare in northern Greece.

Arachova’s economy, reliant on winter tourism, is shifting as the ski season shortens. Efforts are underway to diversify tourism, promoting Arachova as a summer destination. This transformation relies heavily on adequate water supply.

Locals reminisce about wintry pasts, recalling snow-covered landscapes and communal efforts to manage snowy roads. However, the extent of change is evident, with snow becoming rare and disappointing for those familiar with past winters.
