Democrats Face Steep Climb in Senate Race

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, prediction markets indicate the Democrats have a potential, yet uncertain, opportunity to regain control of the Senate. Currently, Republicans maintain a 55-45 majority, meaning Democrats must achieve a net gain of four seats. This situation arises because Vice President JD Vance would cast the tie-breaking vote in a 50-50 Senate.

Key Republican-Held Seats

Democrats eye four Republican-held seats: Alaska, Maine, North Carolina, and Ohio. The Cook Political Report rates Alaska, Maine, and Ohio as toss-ups, while North Carolina leans Democratic despite being Republican-held. However, Democrats also face challenges in Michigan, a seat rated as a toss-up, which could offset gains elsewhere.

Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket reflect this competitive landscape. Kalshi shows Democrats leading in Alaska, Maine, and North Carolina, with Ohio as a toss-up. Similarly, Polymarket indicates leads in Maine and Alaska, with North Carolina and Ohio as dead heats. Yet, for overall Senate control, Polymarket gives Republicans a 56% likelihood of retaining the chamber.

Races in Focus

Alaska

In Alaska, Kalshi gives Democrats a 55% win probability, while Polymarket offers 57% for Democrat Mary Peltola. Polls show mixed results; a New York Times/Siena University poll had Republican Dan Sullivan slightly ahead at 47% to Peltola’s 45%. Nonetheless, prior Alaska Survey Research indicated Peltola had a slight lead.

Maine

Maine shows Democrats favored, with Kalshi listing a 64% win probability and Polymarket at 67%. The race against Republican Senator Susan Collins appears competitive, indicated by a University of New Hampshire poll showing Democrat Troy Jackson leading by 49% to 46%.

North Carolina

North Carolina represents a top opportunity for Democrats. Kalshi gives Democrat Roy Cooper a 90.5% chance against Republican Michael Whatley. Polymarket, however, sees it as a toss-up at 50%. Polls consistently have Cooper ahead, such as a Public Policy Poll conducted in July showing Cooper leading 48% to 44%.

Ohio

Uncertainty looms over Ohio, with both Kalshi and Polymarket presenting a 50% chance for Democrats’ Sherrod Brown against Republican Jon Husted. Polling reflects this indecision; while a New York Times/Siena poll found Husted leading 50% to 47%, other polls have shown slight advantages for Brown.

Challenges in Michigan

Even winning all mentioned Republican-held seats, Democrats face a difficult task in Michigan. Kalshi and Polymarket each give Democrats a 70% chance to hold the seat. Recent polls suggest Democratic Abdul El-Sayed has a narrow lead over Republican Mike Rogers, but a loss here could hinder Democrats’ path to the majority.

Overall Outlook

The projected Senate map remains highly competitive. Democrats must nearly sweep key battlegrounds while securing vulnerable seats like Michigan. Market predictions point to a close race but favor Republicans for retaining Senate control overall. The Democrats’ path requires strategic wins in battleground states and managing risks in Democratic-held areas.
