Two suspects are in custody after a deadly mass shooting at the Seattle Center. The tragic event occurred during the Bite of Seattle food festival. Mayor Katie Wilson described the incident as a “horrific act of violence.”
“Families are enduring the worst moments of their lives,” Wilson stated. “A community grapples with how a celebration of culture and connection ended in tragedy. No one should fear gunfire at public events.”
Police and emergency services arrived shortly after 6 p.m. The venue was hosting the weekend food festival. Due to the incident, Seattle Police advised the public to avoid the area for their safety. “Please avoid the area,” they posted on X.
The Seattle Fire Department reported two fatalities at the scene, despite attempts at life-saving procedures. Three individuals, including a 2-year-old child, were hospitalized in stable condition, while one victim was in serious condition. Another person with minor injuries declined hospitalization.
“Our primary duties are supporting grieving families, caring for the injured, and ensuring the public receives accurate information,” Mayor Wilson added.
An eyewitness, Kayla Carris, stated she was near the Armory when chaos erupted. “Everyone was just throwing stuff and running,” she told The Seattle Times. Another eyewitness, Todd Behrends, reported hearing multiple gunshots and witnessed people struggling to escape.
In response to the shooting, Harborview Medical Center went into lockdown as police activities increased, reported The Seattle Times. Additionally, the Seattle Center Monorail ceased operations for the remainder of Sunday.
