In Brussels, a significant gift was recently presented to Bill White, the U.S. ambassador to Belgium. This was a gold ring encrusted with 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies. The ring featured imagery from American iconography, including giant T’s, the Stars and Stripes, and digits representing important years in U.S. history. Below a radiant ‘250 YEARS USA’, an eagle with diamond wings and a ruby shield clutched emerald olive branches.
The ring was a gift not directly from a foreign government but from Isidore Mörsel, president of the Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC). This association represents Antwerp’s historical diamond community, which has been an economic hub affected by global trade dynamics, especially those initiated by U.S. policies under former President Donald Trump.
A prerecorded video message from Trump at the event offered gratitude for the ‘magnificent Freedom 250 ring’. Mörsel emphasized the ring’s symbolism of partnership and enduring trust between nations, likening its creation to the natural formation of diamonds.
The ring’s monetary value is more modest compared to larger gifts like a $400 million plane from Qatar, yet it holds symbolic importance. Estimated at $25,000 to $35,000, its value becomes more of a talking point within a broader discussion on ostentatious gifts to the U.S. president.
The gift comes at a time when the AWDC successfully advocated for the removal of tariffs on their diamond exports to the U.S., which exceeded $2 billion annually. A White House official stated that the ring had not yet been presented to Trump by the time of reporting. It was highlighted that, while Trump’s acceptance of gifts diverged from traditional White House practices, the ring was reportedly pending display in the Oval Office once formally received.
Attending the celebration, over 8,000 individuals gathered, enjoying American drinks while Alexis Wilkins performed the national anthem. Ambassador White remarked on the substantial fundraising achieved for America’s 250th anniversary, with contributions from corporations like Lockheed Martin, Intel, and Ferrero.
