Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey, is raising alarms about the increasing influence of socialist factions within the Democratic Party. He points to the growing presence of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in recent primary elections as a sign that the party may be shifting. Gottheimer believes that mainstream Democratic leaders must resist radical progressive policies to retain voter confidence and to succeed in tightly contested congressional races.
This weekend, Gottheimer, a key member of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition, criticized the DSA for trying to ‘hijack’ the Democratic Party. He stated that the DSA’s platform, characterized by open borders and other policies, does not align with traditional Democratic values. On Fox News’ ‘The Big Weekend Show,’ he asserted that DSA members are socialists rather than Democrats, suggesting they should form their own party.
Their values, their ideas, are not aligned with ours. They’re utilizing the Democratic Party as a vessel for their beliefs.
Gottheimer referenced footage from the DSA’s Chicago convention, where members discussed removing ICE from campuses and claimed their platform was fundamentally American. Some speakers drew parallels between socialism and Christian values.
The DSA reportedly has around 150,000 members, a small fraction compared to the 45 million registered Democrats. Gottheimer underscored that DSA members are not welcome within the Democratic Party. He criticized party members who support candidates like Graham Platner, indicating disapproval from GOP veterans due to Platner’s controversial past.
Rep. Ro Khanna from California mentioned that Democrats should not have allowed wealth to amass primarily in Wall Street and Silicon Valley at the detriment of working Americans, calling for party reform. Gottheimer argued that fringe coalitions are also entering the Republican Party, each pushing their incompatible policies.
Further tension arose when Johnny Joey Jones questioned whether figures like Hasan Piker could influence the party. Gottheimer dismissed Piker as a grifter who blamed the U.S. for 9/11, reaffirming he is unwelcome in the Democratic Party.
Despite the internal challenges, Gottheimer stated he has no intention to leave the party. However, with examples like Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who switched to the Republican Party during Trump’s presidency, the possibility remains for other Democrats considering their affiliation.
Gottheimer’s district spans ideologically diverse regions, adding complexity to his role. Fox News is seeking comments from both the DSA and Hasan Piker.
