Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, has announced her decision not to support the nomination of Todd Blanche for Attorney General. This decision creates an additional hurdle in Blanche’s already difficult confirmation process. Murkowski’s choice comes despite significant lobbying, including a visit to Alaska by Blanche himself. Her lack of support places increased pressure on Senate Republican leaders, especially in the absence of Senator Mitch McConnell, who has yet to return to the Senate.

Murkowski cited concerns over the politicization of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Blanche’s association with a fund connected to President Donald Trump. This fund, amounting to nearly $2 billion, is viewed by Murkowski and others as a potential tool for what they see as a ‘weaponized’ DOJ. In her statement, she expressed issues with how the DOJ handled sensitive matters, including the release of Epstein files and immunity protections for Trump and his affiliates.

Murkowski stated, “The politicization — even weaponization — of the Department did not start with this administration but has accelerated during it. I take issue with the handling of several matters.”

The DOJ’s agreement to rescind Trump’s fund in writing to certain senators hasn’t quelled Murkowski’s apprehensions. Despite the current pledge, the possibility remains for the fund’s revival, an option Trump has shown interest in pursuing.

The timeline for Blanche’s confirmation vote remains uncertain, as another Republican senator, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, has yet to disclose his voting intentions. If Cassidy does not support Blanche and McConnell remains absent, the vote could tie at 50-50. In such a case, Vice President JD Vance would need to cast the deciding vote.

For now, Blanche faces public opposition from both Murkowski and Senator Susan Collins of Maine. Murkowski sums up her apprehensions by stating, “The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration. I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case.”
