Democratic congressional candidate Cait Conley, a 16-year Army combat veteran, is challenging Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District. She announced on CNN’s “State of the Union” that she would support impeaching War Secretary Pete Hegseth. Conley accuses Hegseth of jeopardizing U.S. national security.
When asked by anchor Dana Bash if she would back Hegseth’s removal from office, Conley affirmed her stance. She stated, “I believe he has been a hazard to American national security and a disgrace to the office.” Conley emphasized that Hegseth’s actions and decisions have failed service members who have pledged loyalty to the country and need respect.
Conley’s comments came after House Democrats introduced six articles of impeachment against Hegseth. The charges relate to his handling of the Iran war, military strikes, his use of Signal for discussing operations, and other issues. Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson dismissed the impeachment attempt, maintaining that Hegseth focuses on protecting the homeland and achieving the president’s goals.
Conley’s opponent’s campaign manager, Ciro Riccardi, criticized her support for impeachment. Riccardi suggested this stance is part of broader criticism of Conley and aligns her with the Democratic party’s progressive side.
Hegseth’s leadership faced scrutiny, especially regarding his use of Signal and subsequent media criticism. He accused anonymous sources of trying to damage his reputation. Pressure on Hegseth is not limited to Democrats. Republican Senator Thom Tillis also called for Hegseth’s replacement, citing concerns over Army leadership.
Despite criticisms, the White House defended Hegseth, with spokeswoman Anna Kelly stating Trump’s continued support for him. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll’s resignation highlighted tensions with Hegseth, though Driscoll praised him publicly.
Fox News Digital requested comments from involved parties but did not immediately receive a response.
